Shane Fitzgerald from Ballynoe in Co Cork was the recipient of the Nuffield Scholarship 2011, sponsored by the Peter Daly Trust.
His study topic is “Animal Health in an expanding Dairy Industry”.
Shane and his wife Fiona have a dairy farm, and they have expanded the herd by 50% over the 2 years to 2010 to 180cows. He is exploring other ways to access land, including partnerships in order to expand further. His study topic is very relevant to him. As an expanding dairy, he has felt the full strain of diseases on his farm during the expansion. These diseases covered a wide spectrum, which led to significant financial loss. At the same time he was involved in a health trial at Moorepark, which showed that the health status of his farm was poor.
He plans to travel to Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria and Switzerland. Other countries may be added to this list, depending on learnings and advice received in the course of his travels. He also intends to visit Australia.
