Micheál McCarthy, from Clonakilty in West Cork, has been awarded the Irish Farmers Journal/Irish Farmers Association Nuffield scholarship for 2012.
Micheál will study “Once A Day Milking and its application to Ireland”. As this is a relatively new concept to Ireland it will be of huge benefit to farmers both pre and post Quotas abolition in 2015. He will investigate the opportunity it presents to Irish dairy farmers.
Micheál, his wife Mairéad and three children operate a Once A Day (OAD) milking, low cost, grass based dairy farm. The farm consists of 140 cows and 90 replacement heifers. They are also in a Milk Production Partnership with 150 cows on another milking block.
He plans to travel to the UK and France where a lot of research is on-going in relation to OAD. He will also investigate its application in South America and New Zealand as well as studying the advantages and disadvantages it presents to owner-operator dairy farmers.
